Any taxpayer that wants to comply with their tax liabilities should use their FIEL and CIEC keys. Both are used to carry out diverse procedures and operations at the services and applications of the Tax Administration Service (SAT).
Electronic signatures are used to carry out legal processes.
What is the FIEL key?
The advanced electronic signature (FIEL, for its acronym in Spanish), now known as e.firm, is a set of data attached to an electronic message with the purpose of identifying the sender as its legitimate author. Essentially, it functions as an autograph signature.
With the help of the FIEL, the taxpayer is enabled to authorize and conduct any electronic tax settlements. Thus, it becomes a tool for electronic authorization.
All taxpayers, both as natural persons or legal entities, are obligated to obtain a FIEL key.
Having a FIEL key secures the taxpayers’ electronic transactions. As these are carried out, the key identifies the message’s sender and ensures that the transaction has not been modified or altered by a third party whatsoever.
Some of the procedures that are possible to carry out from home with the use of the FIEL include:
- Patrimonial statements
- Issuance of official documents
- Issuance of fiscal judgments
- Taxpayer records
- Digital tax receipts
- Authorized donations
- Return requests
What is the CIEC?
The Confidential Electronic Identification Key, known as CIEC for its Spanish acronym, is an access key formed jointly by the Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC) and a password of the individual’s choice. This is a personal, nontransferable code, and cannot be requested by a third party.
This key will be used to carry out any changes, clarifications, or other procedures when accessing the Tax Administration Service (SAT) site.
Some of the services that can be conducted using the CIEC include:
- Declarations and payments
- Download of digital seal certificates
- Data correction
- Consultation of digital tax receipts
- Submission of annual declarations
*The CIEC can be obtained automatically only after procuring the FIEL key.
It is fundamental to have both the FIEL and CIEC keys. Once these have been obtained, they should be safeguarded in a place that can yet be easily accessed and used by their holder.
