What are expert translations?
When legal processes are carried out as a foreigner, or before an international institution, any document written in a language different from the official must be translated. This translation must be certified to conserve its judicial validity.
These translations can be classified in:
- Certified: Official documents including birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, among others.
- Technical: Legal documents, translation of technical texts from diverse branches of specialty.
- Artistic: Stories, novels, film screenplays, television programs, theatre, among others.
Certified translations, also known as translation expertise, consist of the translation of oficial documents submitted before a national or international authority. These must be accredited by an official expert translator registered at the State Supreme Court of Justice.
Certified translations are required to carry out administrative processes.
Certified translations are recognized before official organisms including the Supreme Court of Justice and the Judiciary Council for its translation from a foreign language to Spanish, and vice versa, so that any official document is certified with exactitude and veracity. The translation must be delivered in printed form, signed and sealed.

The requirements and processes for each official translation may vary according to the state, but they must all possess an official seal of national and international validity.
Aspects to consider for a certified translation:
- Complexity or difficulty of the translation.
- Type of paper.
- Type size.
- Format.
- Deadline.
In Mexico, there are diverse local and state organisms that endorse translations by a translation expert, but there is no federal institution that certifies translators nationwide.
Expert translators must use precise terminology and the correct structure so that the text adjusts to the original document and complies with the judicial system of the destination country, maintaining both its official and legal nature.
To carry out a translation it is not only necessary to know the language, but the translator must be a certified expert.
