How to obtain Mexican nationality?

To obtain Mexican nationality, according to Article 30 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, it can only be acquired by birth or by naturalization.

The tourist attraction of Mexico makes different foreigners decide to stay and live in the country.

According to the Population and Housing Census 2010 of the INEGI, the foreigners living in Mexico are from the following countries:

  • United States
  • Spain
  • Guatemala
  • Colombia
  • Argentina

You can have many reasons why you want to obtain Mexican nationality, but it is important that as foreigner you obtain Mexican nationality by receiving from the Secretariat of Relations some of the following naturalization letters:

  • Letter of naturalization by residence.

This document is issued to foreigners who accredit a residence in national territory with the card issued by the Ministry of the Interior, with a temporary or permanent resident status, for at least the last 5 years immediately after the date of application.

  • Letter of naturalization to marry a Mexican.

This document is issued when the foreigner marries a Mexican, and accredits a residence in national territory with the card issued by the Ministry of the Interior, with a condition of temporary or permanent resident, for at least the last 2 years immediately at the date of application.

  • Letter of naturalization for having Mexican children by birth.

This document is issued to foreigners who have Mexican children by birth who prove a residence in national territory with the card issued by the Ministry of the Interior, with a temporary or permanent resident status, for at least the last 2 years immediately at the date of application.

*The condition of stay of temporary resident for students does not generate rights to obtain Mexican nationality by naturalization.

If you are interested in obtaining Mexican nationality by naturalization, we share that you must take an exam about culture and general history of Mexico; If you do not approve them, you must wait at least 10 working days to reapply your application and exams, these can only be submitted twice. After the 2 unsuccessful attempts, you must wait up to one year to enter a new naturalization application.

*As long as you do not have your naturalization card, it is important that keep your residence permit in force. The day you receive the naturalization letter you must deliver your current resident card.
